Seen on 34th and Spring Garden, the Wrice mural will stand taller than the threat of contractors who have been planning to tear it down. On May 21, 2009, the community met with the contractors to discuss the future of the mural and surrounding area. Spokesman and contractor Brain Zellars, reassured that his company would keep the mural up and donate $5,000 for every $10,000 that is made from project. The Temple University MURL Project reported that Wrice established Mantua Against Drugs (MAD) and posted "Wanted" posters with pictures of the various drug dealers in the neighborhood. Wrice’s methods and advocacy was effective and adopted in other Philadelphia neighborhoods. “If they do this to my dad’s mural, who else’s […] will they do it to,” Tammie said. “Most people considered him a movement, much more than just a picture or a painting. [The mural] is alive for them,” Jean said. She is grateful that the community showed support to keep the mural standing. May his mural be undamaged and unharmed; may Herman Wrice’s legacy to continue to sing through the Mantua Streets. |
