Rally

With love in their hearts and passion to fight injustice, the Mantua community encourages one of their leaders.

On April 25th 2009, many rallied in support of Gerald Washington—a Mantua community leader who has been serving a jail sentence which has caused unrest throughout the neighborhood.

Lead by the Mantua Leadership Council’s Jimmy Allen and Harold Davis, the rally began at the St. Jude Baptist Church on 38th and Wallace. Here, Reverend Edwards opened the day with prayer.

Throughout this brief service at the church, the themes of Mantua’s communal history, leadership, self-reliance and determination were spoken from various speakers.

“If we don’t stand up for our folks, no one else will. We are going to stand up today,” Davis said.
Shortly after, the group distributed signs and t-shirts that read themes of social, political and economic injustice. For example, some signs read “Justice for Gerald”, “Stop Locking up the Future” and “Take Economic Control of Our Community”.

The group of volunteers marched down to the playground on 34th and Wallace. Here, the group was welcomed by State Representative Vanessa Brown—who offered her support for Gerald Washington. Additionally, Brown spoke about the various programs her administration and the Black Caucus are working on to progress the Mantua community. These programs included employment, re-entry and education.
A court date has been set for June 8, 2009 for Washington. Further information and to offer support for him, contact the Mantua Leadership Council.
