Students

For the spring semester, Mantua youth are developing their skills through computer technology, art and journalism classes.  Despite other school work and temptations of the warm weather, these students  show dedication to the programs.

Darnell Ryans addresses what the students have been working on for the Techie Kids program.  Students have been taught,  the registry in Windows XP and Operating Systems2.   Ryans describes the successes thus far.
“Student’s were very successful at understanding the concept of the registry as well as what it can be used for. Students learned how to enable and disable certain features of the operating system such as the Control Panel,
Internet Options and changing that infamous background picture, ” Ryans said.

As the Director of Mantua Cares, Ryans sees ways to improve the curriculum, as well.

“I would like to take the students on field trip to connect what is done in the classroom with real world scenarios,” Ryans said.

Similarly,  the journalism program is developing and expanding.  Trenae McDuffie—teacher of this program describes the first class and seeks more interested students.  Students were challenged to think about three positive aspects of their neighborhood, three negative aspects and solutions to the negatives.

“We are still seeking more students passionate about improving writing, poetry, or need ways to express themselves,” McDuffie said.

Here are a few students’ feelings and testimonies of the programs provided through Mantua Cares.

“The thing I like about this program is the computer and entrepreneur classes. These programs are a lot of fun. I learned how to do a couple of things since I've been here.”

“I like this program because I get to use computers and get to mess around with them. I also like this program because I get  to learn new things about computers and see how they work.”
